Journeys to Equity

Ellen Bailey On Purpose, Process, and Payoff

Season 1 Episode 32

Know What Needs To Be Done & Make It Happen

In this episode, Ellen Bailey, Vice President of Diversity and Culture, at Harvard Business Publishing shares insights on what it means to “practice what you publish.”  To that end, she tells a captivating story about how her background in sales equipped her with the skillset to convert DEI strategy into a business plan and effectively sell the need for DEI application in the workplace. Ellen highlights “it is simply not enough to know what problems impact the workplace”, but rather, leaders must be able to efficiently communicate to their colleagues the next steps that need to be taken and why. Ellen emphasizes that although DEI takes initiative, there also is an aspect of humility inserted into the process. A process rooted in reminding ourselves that we do not have all the answers and viewing every experience as a learning opportunity. The ultimate goal is for  “DEI to become who we are and not something we simply do.” Join Ellen as she challenges her audience to be courageous when confronting inequitable structures, to not ask for permission to create more inclusive spaces, and to just do!
